Description

Purpose Statement:

The job of Bus Monitor is done for the purpose/s of assisting students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.                          

 

Not Evaluated Functions

  • Assesses potential emergency situations on the bus and within loading and unloading zones for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the wellbeing of passengers. 
  • Assists students for the purpose of providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Attends meetings (e.g. training, in-service, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information to perform job functions.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining safety.
  • Monitors students (e.g. unruly, disruptive, abusive language, etc.) for the purpose of preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
  • Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the students’ safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student count, passenger misconduct, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.)  for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures students and/or equipment with restraints, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seatbelts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks using existing skills.  Specific skills    required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying basic methods and procedures to be followed in controlling or modify behavior; and adhering to safety practices.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures and approved procedures/techniques involved in supervising students.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use job-related equipment.  Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data and utilize job-related equipment.  In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working as part

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking and 15% standing. The job is performed under temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Purpose Statement: (as needed)

The job of School Bus Driver is done for the purpose/s of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle operation is in safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

 

Essential Functions

  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing regulations and maintaining passenger safety
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving and/or referring to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Attends meetings, classroom and behind the wheel training, safety meeting, etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting the certificate requirement/s of a school bus driver.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles (e.g. windows, floor, seats, dashboards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Drives school bus/s for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, emergency doors, lights, test brakes, horn, snow chains/drop down, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines,
  • Prepares documents and reports (e.g. daily trip log, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries (e.g. students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
  • Supervises students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of maintaining safety and following district policy.

Other Functions

  • Assists other personnel as required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats,  and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; Motor Vehicle Code sections on student transportation; city streets and locations.

  • Certificates and Licenses - Washington State Commercial Driver’s License Type B with passenger endorsement and the air brake restriction removed
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • Have at least five years of experience as a licensed driver of passenger vehicle
  • Continuing Educ./Training: D.O.T. re-certification
  • Clearances: Fingerprint and Background Check; Drug Screening

Starting Wage: Bus Driver $18.53
