OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

The functions in an interdependent role to deliver care as directed and assist in the revision of care plans in collaboration with the registered nurse. The health services program is designed to respond to each student’s unique developmental health needs, contribute to safe and healthy school environment, ensure that health needs are recognized and planned for in the total school program and meet state and federal health-related requirements.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides nursing tasks as directed by the RN including medication administration including insulin administration, medical procedures (G-tube feedings, Clean Intermittent Catheterization, blood glucose testing, peak flow readings, etc.)

  • Provides first aid and emergency services as necessary for students, staff, and visitors. Including initial assessment, appropriate care for illness and injuries according to the Department of Health “Guidelines for Illness and Injury at School,” notify parents of illness/injury, contact 911 as indicated.

  • Reviews inventory of health rooms and stocks supplies as necessary.

  • Maintains on-going communication with school nurse to report findings, and receive ongoing direction and support.

  • Train, supervise and delegate authority to designated staff members who administer medications specified under school district policy. Monitor oral medication administration and health room procedures.

  • Coordinate health screening (vision/hearing/scoliosis) with volunteer groups and, when necessary, train volunteers or staff to conduct screenings.

  • Conduct monthly check of the site’s AED device and arrange for maintenance/repair as needed.

  • Perform other duties as appropriate to specific assignment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of the principles of CNA and medical terminology.

  2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of aseptic/sterile techniques and infectious disease control.

  3. Knowledge of care and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment.

  4. Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

  5. Knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy, physiology, psyco/social, and disease entities.

  6. Ability to communicate in person, writing, or on the phone, with students, staff, parents, and volunteers in a diverse environment.

  7. Ability to work under pressure, adjust to varied situations, demands and new health issues.

  8. Ability to learn and integrate policies and procedures adopted by the school building, the District and the State of Washington.

  9. Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information.

Bilingual Preferred

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Washington State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

  3. Previous experience working with school-age children preferred.

  4. Background check, fingerprinting, and sexual misconduct disclosure release.

CERTIFICATE & LICENSES

  1. Washington State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

  2. Valid First Aid and CPR Card

  3. Valid Driver’s License and Evidence of Insurability.

  • RN, Registered Nurse $34
  • LPN, Licensed Practical Nurse $30

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing.  The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere
